Why Kittens Need Deworming So Often

The kitten schedule looks aggressive compared to the adult one for good reason: kittens can acquire intestinal parasites before they're even born, through transmission across the placenta, or shortly after through their mother's milk — meaning a kitten can be born already carrying roundworms regardless of how clean their environment is. On top of that, a kitten's immune system hasn't yet developed the partial resistance an adult cat gradually builds up, and parasite burdens that an adult cat tolerates with minimal symptoms can cause a young kitten genuine harm — poor growth, a pot-bellied appearance, diarrhea, and in heavy infestations, anemia from blood-feeding parasites like hookworms. The repeated dosing through the first several months isn't overtreatment; it reflects both this early-life transmission route and the fact that a single dose only kills adult worms present at that moment, not any that hatch from eggs already in the intestine afterward — repeat dosing at intervals timed to the parasite life cycle is what actually breaks the cycle.

What "Worms" Actually Means — Several Different Parasites

Roundworms (Toxocara cati) are the most common intestinal parasite in kittens, spread through the placenta/milk route described above as well as through ingesting infected soil or prey. Hookworms attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, making them a particular concern for causing anemia in heavily-infested kittens. Tapeworms (most commonly Dipylidium caninum) have a genuinely different transmission route worth understanding specifically: a cat gets tapeworms by ingesting an infected flea during grooming, not through soil or direct worm exposure — which means a cat with a flea problem has an ongoing tapeworm risk that a standard dewormer alone won't fully solve without also addressing the fleas themselves. Indoor Cats Still Need This

"My cat never goes outside" is a common and understandable reason owners assume deworming doesn't apply to their cat, but it's not a fully reliable protection. Flea infestation (and the tapeworms that follow) can be brought inside on clothing or another pet without the cat ever setting foot outdoors; houseflies and cockroaches can mechanically carry roundworm eggs; and a kitten adopted with an existing, not-yet-treated parasite burden from before adoption doesn't become parasite-free just by moving indoors. This is exactly why the calculator above still generates a recommended interval for indoor-only cats, just a less frequent one than for outdoor or hunting cats specifically — indoor status reduces risk meaningfully, but doesn't eliminate the case for periodic deworming or fecal testing entirely.

Signs Worth Watching For Between Scheduled Doses

Visible worms or worm segments in stool or near the anus are the most obvious sign, though many infestations produce no visible worms at all despite a real parasite burden — this is part of why scheduled deworming (or periodic fecal testing, which your vet can discuss as an alternative or complement to blanket deworming) matters rather than waiting for visible confirmation. Other signs include a dull coat, a pot-bellied appearance particularly in kittens, chronic soft stool or diarrhea, weight loss despite normal appetite, and visible scooting or excessive licking at the anal area. Any of these combined with a kitten who isn't gaining weight as expected warrants a vet visit rather than waiting for the next scheduled dose.

A Note on Human Risk

Several feline intestinal parasites, roundworms in particular, are zoonotic — meaning they can infect humans too, typically through accidental ingestion of contaminated soil (a real consideration with sandboxes and gardens in households with outdoor cats) or, less commonly, direct contact. Children are at somewhat higher practical risk given typical hand-to-mouth behavior and outdoor play. This isn't a reason for alarm with routine deworming and reasonable hygiene (hand-washing after litter box cleaning or gardening, keeping sandboxes covered when not in use), but it is part of why consistent deworming is a household health measure and not purely a cat-comfort one.
