Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common hormonal disorders in older cats, caused by an overactive thyroid gland producing excess thyroid hormone. It speeds up the whole body's metabolism, and while very treatable, it can cause serious secondary heart and other organ effects if left unaddressed.

Causes

Medication typically brings thyroid levels under control within 2-4 weeks, with dose adjustments based on recheck bloodwork; radioactive iodine or surgery can be curative, often resolving the condition in a single treatment.

Possible Complications

Secondary heart disease (thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy), high blood pressure and its complications (including sudden blindness), and — importantly — unmasking of underlying chronic kidney disease once thyroid levels are corrected, since hyperthyroidism can artificially improve kidney blood flow and mask reduced kidney function. Untreated hyperthyroidism places significant strain on the heart, commonly causing a form of heart disease (hyperthyroid cardiomyopathy) that can improve or even resolve once the underlying thyroid condition is treated; hyperthyroidism can also mask or complicate underlying kidney disease, since the condition's effect on blood flow can temporarily make kidney function look better than it actually is, sometimes revealing significant kidney disease only after successful thyroid treatment normalizes blood flow again.

Long-Term Management

Regular bloodwork rechecks to monitor thyroid levels (and kidney function) whichever treatment path is chosen, blood pressure monitoring, and consistent medication administration if managed medically rather than with a definitive treatment.

Prevention

No known reliable prevention; regular senior wellness bloodwork allows early detection, which is the most effective way to reduce the risk of secondary complications.

Prognosis

Excellent with appropriate treatment — this is one of the more successfully treatable chronic conditions in older cats, particularly when caught before significant secondary heart or kidney complications develop. Generally very good with appropriate treatment — radioactive iodine therapy specifically offers a genuine cure in the substantial majority of treated cats, and even lifelong medication management typically allows a normal or near-normal lifespan, making this one of the more treatable serious endocrine conditions in cats when actually diagnosed and managed rather than left untreated.
