Overview
Heat stroke occurs when a cat's body temperature rises to dangerous levels (typically above 105°F/40.5°C) faster than their body can dissipate it — cats are actually somewhat less prone to heat stroke than dogs given they don't pant as their primary cooling mechanism and tend to avoid extreme heat instinctively, but it remains a genuine risk in situations like being left in a hot car (where temperatures rise dangerously within minutes even with windows cracked), being confined without shade or water on a hot day, or in brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds who have inherently less effective heat-dissipation ability given their airway structure.
First Aid Steps
- Move the cat to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned area immediately
- Begin cooling with lukewarm (not ice-cold) water — wetting the fur, particularly on the belly, paws, and ears where blood vessels are close to the skin surface, helps dissipate heat effectively
- Do not use ice or ice-cold water — this can cause blood vessels near the skin to constrict, actually trapping heat in the body's core rather than releasing it, and can also cause dangerous shivering
- A fan directed at the wet fur can help speed evaporative cooling
- Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water to drink if the cat is alert enough to drink on their own — do not force water into the mouth of a cat who is not fully alert, given aspiration risk
- Stop active cooling once the cat reaches around 103°F (39.4°C) if you have a way to check, to avoid overcooling — otherwise, continue cooling efforts during the trip to a veterinarian
- Get to a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately, since heat stroke can cause organ damage that isn't apparent from how the cat looks once initial cooling has helped
When to Seek Emergency Care
Any suspected heat stroke needs veterinary evaluation, even after successful cooling, since organ damage (particularly to the kidneys and clotting system) can develop over the following 24-72 hours and needs monitoring bloodwork to catch. Collapse, seizures, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, or continued very high body temperature despite cooling efforts means this is a genuine emergency requiring immediate transport rather than continued home cooling attempts.
Prevention
Never leave a cat in a parked car, even briefly or with windows cracked — vehicle interior temperatures rise dramatically within minutes even on a mild day. Ensure outdoor or unsupervised cats always have access to shade and fresh water, and be particularly attentive with flat-faced breeds, senior cats, overweight cats, and cats with existing heart or respiratory conditions, all of whom have reduced heat tolerance.
