How Much Is Dangerous
Not reliably established, and this unpredictability is itself the central safety-relevant fact about this toxin, not a minor caveat. Some animals have developed kidney failure from a small handful of grapes or a few raisins, while other animals have reportedly tolerated larger amounts without apparent effect. Because there is currently no reliable way to predict in advance which cats (or which specific grapes) carry meaningful risk, veterinary toxicology guidance treats any ingestion as potentially serious regardless of the amount involved.
Symptoms
- Vomiting, often within a few hours of ingestion
- Lethargy and reduced appetite
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain, sometimes evident as a hunched posture or reluctance to be handled around the belly
- Increased urination initially, followed by decreased or absent urination as kidney injury progresses — a pattern similar to that seen with several other nephrotoxic exposures on this list
- Signs of established kidney failure — lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite — typically becoming apparent 24–72 hours after ingestion

First Aid Steps
- Contact a veterinarian promptly for any grape, raisin, or currant ingestion, regardless of the quantity involved, given how genuinely unpredictable individual sensitivity to this toxin has proven to be in documented cases
- Note the approximate quantity and specific type eaten (grapes versus raisins, which are considerably more concentrated per piece since drying removes water while retaining the toxic compound) to share with your veterinary team, since this informs the risk assessment even given the overall unpredictability
What Not To Do
- Do not assume a "small amount" is automatically safe based on the quantity alone — the genuinely unpredictable nature of this specific toxin means there is no reliably safe threshold quantity, unlike toxins where risk scales predictably with dose
- Do not wait for symptoms to appear before seeking veterinary care — kidney injury from this toxin can develop silently in its early stages, and treatment started before injury is established produces substantially better outcomes than treatment started after the fact
Veterinary Treatment
Decontamination — induced vomiting and/or activated charcoal — performed as early as possible after ingestion, followed by IV fluid therapy specifically intended to support kidney function and flush the kidneys, typically continued for around 48 hours, alongside repeated bloodwork monitoring kidney values throughout treatment. As with lily toxicity, early and aggressive treatment before kidney injury has fully set in produces meaningfully better outcomes than treatment started after kidney values have already become abnormal.
Toxic Compound
Genuinely unknown. Despite the well-documented clinical effect — acute kidney injury — the specific toxic principle in grapes and raisins has never been conclusively identified, similar in this respect to the lily toxin discussed elsewhere on this list. Tartaric acid/potassium bitartrate is one proposed mechanism, based on parallel effects observed with cream of tartar (which is chemically related and has independently been documented to cause similar kidney injury in dogs), but this remains an active area of study rather than settled fact. Toxicity has also been observed to vary considerably between different grape batches, sources, and even growing conditions for reasons that aren't fully understood — which is a genuinely unusual and important feature of this toxin, not a gap in available research that will necessarily be resolved with more study.
