Philodendron
Philodendron spp.
⚠ If exposure just happened
Contact your vet or an animal poison control hotline immediately — don't wait to see if symptoms develop. Bring packaging or plant material with you if possible.
How Much Is Dangerous
Rarely serious; oral irritation is the primary concern, similar in character and severity range to Pothos. Concentration of the irritant compound does vary somewhat between the many varieties within this large genus, though all should genuinely be treated with the same general caution described here.
Symptoms
- Oral pain and pawing at the mouth
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Swelling of the mouth and lips in more significant exposures involving more plant material chewed
Time to Symptoms
Immediate to within minutes of chewing the plant.
First Aid Steps
- Rinse the mouth with water if tolerated, to help clear residual plant material
- Contact a veterinarian if swelling or drooling is significant, worsening, or persists beyond a couple of hours
What Not To Do
- Do not force the mouth open to inspect it while the cat is in obvious discomfort and resisting handling
- Do not assume all varieties within the large Philodendron genus are identical in risk — when in doubt about a specific variety, a quick call to a vet or poison control can clarify whether additional monitoring is warranted
Veterinary Treatment
Usually supportive care only, with the same general approach as other calcium-oxalate-containing houseplants — monitoring, symptomatic relief, and veterinary evaluation if signs progress beyond mild. Most cases resolve within a few hours to a day with basic supportive care and monitoring at home, reserving veterinary evaluation for cases with more significant or persistent signs.
Toxic Compound
Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, the same raphide mechanism as Dieffenbachia and Pothos — Philodendron is a large genus with many popular houseplant varieties (heartleaf philodendron being especially common), and while concentration of the irritant compound varies somewhat between varieties, all should be treated as capable of causing this type of mechanical oral irritation.
